Charter Switches Athletic Conferences for the 2017-18 School Year

Charter Switches Athletic Conferences for the 2017-18 School Year

Charter School of Wilmington’s football team faces off during a game.  The football team has not been successful for a long time, prompting, in part, the switch in athletic conferences.

This year, school administration has made an important decision for the 2017-18 school year: All athletic teams will be switching to a new conference.  Mr. Eddy, the school’s athletic director, explained why, “We made the decision on what we thought was best for our overall teams.  A lot of people thought maybe it was done just for football but that’s very far from the truth.”

Charter’s football team has not been very successful in their current conference, the Blue Hen Conference, and their current record is eight losses and one win. The conference Charter will be moving into, Diamond State Conference, will have eight teams as of next year: Red Lion Christian Academy, First State Military Academy, Charter School of Wilmington, MOT Charter, Archmere Academy, Conrad Schools of Science, Newark Charter and Delaware Military Academy.  “Level of play we think is going to be a little more even across the board.  Obviously for football it is going to be more beneficial, but also [for] baseball, volleyball, field hockey; overall we think the Diamond State Conference is going to be better for our school,” Mr. Eddy said.

The hope is that the change of conferences will benefit both the sports that are struggling and the sports that we have been far more dominant in.  Overall, the 2017-18 school year will undoubtedly bring changes to Charter athletics, but these changes will be for the better.
