Talking to Teachers

Dear advice column,

How do I tell a teacher I feel demeaned and stupid when they talk to me in front of the class?

                                                                        Sincerely,

                                                                                 Overtly Ostracized

Dear Overtly Ostracized,

It is not uncommon for students to feel embarrassed when a teacher talks to them in front of the class.  There is a very good chance that the teacher doesn’t know that they are upsetting you. It is very important that you talk to them and tell them how you feel.  After all, it is their job to give us the best education experience they can.  They most likely are not doing this to deliberately hurt you.  It would be best to talk to them alone after class so you are not putting them on the spot in front of other students.  Calmly explain to the teacher that when they talk to you in front of the class it upsets you and ask them politely to stop.  Hopefully this will solve the problem!  Once they are aware of the problem they will most likely stop.  If the behavior continues you may want to seek the help of administration.  We wish you the best!!

                                                                   Sincerely,

                                                                      C&H
