I have been using Bluetooth headphones for years. For the past couple years I used Jaybird Bluetooth headphones with moderate success. The Jaybirds had issues with range, battery life and were difficult to charge. After my Jaybird X3 headphones were stolen, I decided to try the $160 Apple AirPods. Six months later, I am surprisingly happy about my purchase.

However, I am well aware that the AirPods won’t win design awards anytime soon. The headphones have a strange, unappealing design and a loose fit. In my experience, the AirPods have never fallen out of my ears even during intensive exercise. Whether the AirPods will fit in your ear depends on your ear shape. I would recommend trying them out at a local Apple Store before purchasing them.

The AirPods are Bluetooth headphones focused on convenience. They have combination of decent battery life and stellar charging speed, 15 minutes of charging in their magnetic charging case can provide 3 hours of listening time and a reliable 5 hours on a full charge. The case itself is charged through a standard lightning cable and can provide multiple, complete and fast charges to the AirPods. When you open the case, a menu box appears on your iPhone with a pair button. The AirPods seamlessly pair with your iPhone and the rest of your Apple devices using the new W1 Chip. In my experience, the AirPods have slightly better sound quality than the standard Apple EarPods or other sub $50 earphones. To pause the music, simply remove one of the AirPods out of your ear. This feature was extremely convenient when I needed to have a quick chat with a student or my parents. In my experience, the microphones on the AirPods are sufficient for calls, but slightly worse than the microphone on the standard Apple EarPods. However, the AirPods are not useful or worth the price for most consumers.

In conclusion, the AirPods are a perfect example of a niche product. The lack of water resistance, the awkward design and fit makes the AirPods unappealing for most people. The AirPods are only worth the $160 price under certain conditions: if they fit in your ears, you have a plethora of Apple products and you value convenience over great audio quality. If you decide to purchase the AirPods, then you should buy them online from Best Buy or the Apple Store for quick delivery.
